Which size Ventoux is right for you?

Selecting the correct Ventoux Road box is a simple process of confirming your bike's dimensions against the box limits. Because road geometries are generally fairly consistent, we offer one primary box length with two different width options to accommodate varying cockpit setups.

Before starting measurement, confirm your bars can turn 101 degrees to the right. If they can't, you'll need to look at an Aubisque which allows you to mount your bike into the box with the bars straight, or a Tourmalet which requires removal of bars.

Step 1: Confirm your wheelbase (Measurement C)

Measurement C is the horizontal distance between the centre of your front axle and the centre of your rear axle. This is your wheelbase.

  • The Ventoux accommodates a wheelbase between 905 mm and 1055 mm. The internal mounting is fully adjustable within this range, which covers the vast majority of standard road and gravel frames.

Step 2: Choose your width (Measurement D)

To ensure your bike is held securely without the shifters or bars touching the box walls, you need to select the correct width. Measurement D is the distance from the centre of your stem cap to an imaginary line at the furthest point your shifter hoods extend. We need this measurement as your bars turn 101 degrees to the right when mounted in the box.

  • Choose the Standard width if Measurement D is 270 mm or less. This is suitable for most traditional road setups and integrated cockpits.
  • Choose the Wide width if Measurement D is over 270 mm. This is specifically designed for bikes with larger bars or longer shifter hoods.

If your measurement is exactly 270 mm, we recommend selecting the Wide option to ensure there is plenty of clearance for your levers.

Additionally, a measurement worth taking but not shown is the width of your bars across the widest point (e.g. bar flares). This should be a maximum of 550 mm - however it's very rare that your bars will exceed this.

Step 3: Verify your height (Measurements A)

These measurements ensure your bike sits comfortably within the box once the lid is closed.

  • Seat post height (Measurement A): This is the linear distance from the centre of your bottom bracket to the top of your seat tube (NOT including seat post or saddle). The maximum allowable height is 675 mm. If your seat tube is higher than this, or if you have an integrated seat post (ISP) that exceeds this limit, you will need to lower or remove the post for transit, or contact us for a custom heigh upper box section.

Step 4: Check your cockpit-to-axle measurements (Measurements B1 and B2)

Finally, check the cockpit-to-axle measurements to ensure the frame fits within the outer shell.

  • B1: This is the linear distance from the centre of the front wheel axle to the top cap on the steerer tube. The maximum is 700 mm.
  • B2: This is the linear distance from the centre of the front wheel axle to the highest point on the stem. The maximum is 675 mm.

Please note: while not shown on the measurement diagram, the width of your bars at the widest point (e.g. across the bar flares) should be no more than 550 mm.

Which finish is right for you?

Pavé Grey Standard Finish
Pavé Grey is our new standard finish replacing our Waves graphics: a carefully chosen enhanced powder coat in a sleek grey that suits every box we build. The structural frame sections are silver anodised, giving a clean contrast against the Pavé panels while offering their own protection.

Enhanced Powder Coat Finish
Our Enhanced Powder Coat Finish is a popular upgrade, offering nearly 100 stunning colours. Matt works great for light shades, while gloss excels for darker colours. Pick a colour to make your box as unique as you!

Which colour is right for you?

Choose from a selection of rich, varied colours crafted to withstand the rigours of travel and match your own personal style. Simply select matt, satin or gloss, and then the colour of your choice. In our opinion, matt is great for more understated colours, while gloss excels for vivid colours.

Larger versions of each swatch can be seen here, but please note the colour swatches are representative. Screen colours differ slightly from physical finishes and depending on the choice of matt, satin or gloss. Looking for vinyl deal colours? Visit this page.

Which axle sizes should you pick for your Ventoux?

The Ventoux is engineered to provide a secure transport solution for your bike, ensuring your frame remains isolated from external impacts. To achieve this, the internal mounting system's dummy hubs must match your bike's specific axle standards, as this is what holds your bike inside the box.

For the front axle, most contemporary disc-brake road bikes use a 12 x 100 mm thru-axle (we also offer a 15 x 100 mm option), while rim-brake models will generally require a standard quick-release (QR). For the rear axle, the common standard for disc bikes is 12 x 142 mm, whereas rim-brake bikes typically use a standard QR. A track option is also available. It is always worth confirming these dimensions in your bike's technical manual, as a precise fit is what prevents lateral movement during transit.

What are nameplates?

Buxumbox nameplates are premium laser-etched aluminium panels securely attached next to one of the handles on the top half of each box. As well as the custom details you provide, each nameplate comes with a serial number unique to your box.

Which wheelbag size is right for you?

The Small wheelbag is engineered for the road and light gravel market. It comfortably accommodates wheels up to 700c with tyre widths up to 42mm. If you are running a classic road configuration or a versatile all-road tyre, this size provides a snug, secure fit that prevents movement and protects against impact.

For those heading off-road or running high-volume rubber, the Large wheelbag is designed for 29-inch mountain bike wheels and wide-clearance gravel setups. It handles tyre widths of 43mm and above with ease, offering the extra internal volume required for chunky treads and wider hub spacing.

Both sizes feature heavy-duty zips, velcro panels for the anti-crush bar to pass through, and reinforced contact points, providing a professional-grade solution for transporting your most critical components.

Please note that large wheelbags are perfectly capable of holding smaller diameter wheels.

Standard Pavé Grey Finish

Road, gravel, and cyclocross bikes belong in a Ventoux - designed for those with integrated cockpits where removal isawkward, time-consuming, or simply inadvisable.

Remove the wheels and seatpost, and you're done. Five minutes. Bars stay on.

For larger or more complex builds, there's no better solution. The Ventoux is hand-built in the UK from 6061-T6 aluminium - a box engineered to last a cycling lifetime, not a few race seasons. Precision mounting brackets hold your frame securely without foam or padding. TSA-approved key locks mean airport inspections happen without forced locks or a damaged box.

Four inline skate wheels with sealed bearings make it one-handed to move through airports. Rear wheels are fixed, while castering front wheels give precise control when fully loaded.

Compatible with all thru-axle sizes and quick release hubs. External dimensions: 134 × 87 × 36 cm (52.6 × 34.2 × 14.2") in the standard width option and weighs in at 15 kg. For stems over 270 mm horizontal from stem cap to the forward-most point of the shifter, the Wide option measures 134 × 87 × 41 cm (52.6 × 34.2 × 16.2") and weighs 15.5 kg. See which Which Size? link in the Bike Box Size menu for more information on how to measure your bike to decide which size is right for you.

Need MTB versatility? Switch the front and rear mounting brackets with the MTB Pack - available as an accessory - and the Ventoux converts for mountain bike use.

Please note: fork and handlebars must be able to turn 101 degrees to the right to enable fitting without disassembly.

Available in Pavé Grey or our Enhanced Powder Coat Finish in a huge choice of colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my bike fit in? What box do I need?

We have all the bases covered – there are four distinct models according to your type of bike and preference for size vs pack time. On each of the product pages there are measurement guides for each box to help you pick a size.

The Aubisque is our dedicated aero road, triathlon and time trial bike box. It’s been designed for bikes with integrated cockpits that can’t be disassembled easily.

The Ventoux will also accommodate seat tubes up to 635mm, covering many ISPs – and for giants, we can produce extended height versions on a build-to-order basis.

The Stelvio is our MTB box, with standard size for XC and trail bikes or long wheelbase option for big hitter downhill/enduro bikes.

The Tourmalet is our most compact box, requiring most disassembly (handlebars need to be removed). But it is the smallest and therefore lightest.

We’d always recommend using the smallest box the bike can fit in to – for that reason we even provide three height options for the compact Tourmalet model.

How long will it take to build my box?

Our lead times are typically 4-6 weeks from placing your order to your order being ready to ship. The reason we ask for a travel date is to ensure we don't take orders that we can't get customers in time to avoid disappointment. We can sometimes flex this and prioritise extremely urgent orders, so please just ask us if this is the case.

How long will it take for my box to arrive?

Typical delivery times following the initial 4-6 build lead time:

  • UK: 48 hours
  • EU: 4-5 days
  • US: 7-10 days
  • ROW: 7-10 days

We only use trusted, high quality shipping partners in FedEx and DHL.

Why aluminium?

It’s a wonderful sustainable material – extremely strong in the grades we use (mainly 6061, as used on high-end frames and in aerospace applications), light weight (panels are just 0.5mm thick), versatile (we use it as sheet, extrusions, turnings and stampings) corrosion resistant and eminently recyclable. And oh, it looks good too! Plus, we an offer an amazing range of powder coat colours too.

Will it dent or scratch?

Yes it will, but only in a good way. And that’s also what makes aluminium such a great material – each cycling journey will add a patina of use and earn the odd distinctive scar but without impacting strength or structure. We like to think we look better with age.

Of course, no material is indestructible and there is always a balance to be struck between strength and weight. If a panel is breached due to, for instance, wilful neglect on the part of a baggage handler then it would not spell the end for your box – panel repair/replacement is straightforward and supported by the factory.

Our experience is that a Buxumbox can take far more abuse than moulded plastic or semi-rigid boxes (and is repairable too!)

I hate packing - please tell me that packing your boxes is painless?

It’s painless. In fact, making these boxes simple to use, highly versatile and quick to pack is a design fundamental. You don’t need a degree in applied mental gymnastics here – we’re all about these boxes being intuitive to use. The Tourmalet takes less than ten minutes to pack or unpack and the Ventoux under five minutes, with the absolute minimum of disassembly required.

Will airlines charge for a bike box?

Probably yes, but that's true of every bike box on the market, but policies vary by airline. The good news is that there is a trend by airlines to offer transparent pricing polices for items of Sporting Goods rather than simply applying excess baggage rules.

You can normally find policies and rates by searching for Sporting Goods or Bicycles on your airline’s website.

Can you produce custom boxes?

Yes – within certain physical limits and the limits of physics! As well as producing custom sizes and hardware features for large or unusual bikes (even tandems), we can provide custom decals and logos – for an individual individual or a club/team.

The most popular customisation feature is to have the box powder-coated in a colour of the customer’s choice – examples of recent production can be found on our blog page and Facebook.
